We all have the reasons to be happy because the recent 2010 Barangay Elections turned out to be as organized and peaceful as the national elections that took place in June were. Though the counting of ballots were manually done, COMELEC was able to declare winners on time. There may have been a handful of election-related violence reported but these were not validated. Which made the AFP and the PNP to conclude that the elections have been generally peaceful.
In our side of town, the barangay chairman lives just below our apartment. She and her family occupies the 1st and second floors of the exact apartment unit I'm renting (we're on the third floor). She run for her supposed second term and got re-elected yesterday. I saw her on my way to the office this morning and congratulated her for her victory.
Living with the barangay chairman just below us can be reassuring. Now I know I have someone to depend on in case of emergencies. I know she's very approachable and dependable because I have witnessed her kindness several times. She even accompanied me personally when I talked and closed the deal with the owner of our apartment today.
After the grueling campaign period, it's time for everyone to go back to work. With new officials swearing into office at this point, I hope all barangays in the Philippines get the real growth and prosperity they deserve soon.
