The pain of losing a loved one can be unexplainable and unbearable for most of us. Who in his right mind would want to welcome death with open arms, anyway? The tragic hostage drama yesterday is one of the saddest events I’ve witnessed this year.

The peoples of the Philippines and Hong Kong have never felt so lonely. The tragic hostage drama that transpired yesterday has left the two countries mourning for lost lives. As a Filipino and as a human being, I condemn the violence and cruelty I watched live on TV last night.

With what happened, we cannot blame the Hong Kong government for issuing a travel ban to the Philippines. Their people are entitled to the highest level of safety and security, just like what we would expect for ourselves when we are in a foreign country.

But as they say, when there’s bad news, there’s good news that would come along to sort of balance things out. Ours came in the form of victory at the recently concluded 2010 Miss Universe Beauty pageant held in Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas. Miss Philippines Maria Venus Raj has made it to the top 5 and finished 4th runner-up.

Her winning not only made our country proud but also lifted our spirits following the hostage crisis our country confronted head-on (but failed miserably according to some people.

My sympathies and prayers go to the families of those who died in the hostage incident yesterday. On the other hand, my congratulations go to the winners of the recently concluded 2010 Miss Universe Beauty Pageant.
