Update: It's official, Pacquiao beat De La Hoya by TKO at 8th round!
The forthcoming Manny Pacquiao vs. Oscar de la Hoya boxing match is the talk of the town these days. Television networks, radio stations, national broadsheets and even blogs are using up copious amount of bandwidth and space just to share opinions and report the latest developments about it. Why not if it's just around the corner (December 6, 2008 to be exact)? I heard it's going to be the world's biggest boxing event of the year.
Some people think the Pacquiao-de la Hoya fight is all about money and a mismatch, with Pacquiao on the losing end given his height and weight disadvantages. Others think otherwise. As for me, I still go for Pacquiao. It's not because I am Filipino and I love my own but because I have faith in the Filipino boxing hero that has brought enough prestige and glory for the Philippines. I believe that he can send to retirement de la Hoya who has been famous for his line "I want the loudest and the biggest dog in the pound."
Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao is a well-disciplined athlete. We've seen how he trained in the past. He's strong and fast and those are his advantages. We've seen how he did his best in his previous fights. I know he is working doubly hard for this very important fight of his life as a boxer. He needs every support he can get from his fellow Filipinos.
Instead of criticizing Manny Pacquiao for the decision he made to finally face dela Hoya in the ring, let us just give our full support to the team Pacquiao. The result of this fight may not affect our lives as much as Pacquiao's and his supporters', but it will surely leave a mark in our history as a proud and united nation.
Manny Pacquiao is an inspiration not only for his fellow Filipino boxers but also for many Filipinos. His rise from rags to riches and fame didn't happen overnight. It's a story of hope, faith, courage, love, resilience and optimism. He is not at all perfect but we can all get a piece of thought or learn a lesson from what Pacquiao has been through in his colorful life.
