Emilia (or Mamala as what we fondly call her) is my boyfriend's aunt whom I have a healthy relationship with. She is one physically fit woman and even in her early 70s, she rarely gets sick. She seldom goes to the hospital except for occasional check-ups. That is why it came as a surprise to us when one Saturday she suddenly passed out and was needed to be rushed to the hospital. She had a stroke.
In the hospital, the doctors studied her condition and would later inform the family of the bitter news. Apparently, Mamala's system was terribly affected by the stroke. They said she only had weeks. Her loved ones shed tears and prepared themselves for the worst and the inevitable.
After laying in coma for more than a week, Mamala opened her eyes one morning. She showed other signs of recovery (i.e. moving her right arm, defecating, etc.) much to the delight of her family and the surprise of her doctors. Miraculous as it may appear, but sometimes God works in mysterious ways. The fact that she can still recognize faces and hear voices is a blessing. The family is grateful.
But then, reality still bites. One third of Mamala's body is paralyzed. She can't speak. She has yet to pee by herself. Her vital signs are unstable. Only God can tell if she will fully recover or not. Like I said, the family is optimistic but does not brush aside the fact that she could be dying.
Prayers do wonders. Today, I ask my friends (you reading this included) to pray for her.
P.S. Edwin and I have just gotten home after staying overnight in the hospital to watch over Mamala.
