Running My Way to Good Health
Posted by edelweiza in active runners, Fun Runs, Healthy Lifestyle, Manila runs, On Running, running as a hobby, running as a sport, running in the Philippines, Running Shoes, shoes brand
It's been more than a month since the fiancee and I started running. By that, I mean the occasional fun runs that we join in, our weekly jog at the Quirino Grandstand and Rizal Park grounds and the regular jogging that we do almost nightly at the comfort and security of our neighborhood. Our goal is to run our way back to good health since we both gained so much weight last year.
We have a love-hate relationship with running. At this point, we can say we are loving it so much because little by little, we're seeing improvements in our body and in our health. And we're proud to say that aside from getting physical benefits from running, we are also able to help other people by joining fun runs that promote important causes. Just like when we joined the United Nations - World Food Programme's End Hunger: Walk the World running event that benefited the children of Mindanao.

Actually, our ultimate running dream is to join a marathon. We're getting there. We just have to do a lot of preparations first. I remember that to get us started in running, we got ourselves new running shoes. I have always believed that investing in a pair of good running shoes is a must if one is to make running a part of his lifestyle. There are many brands of shoes in the market today that choosing your pair becomes quite difficult. For so long, we have been loyal to this brand of running shoes because of their continued innovation on the style, design and high-tech features of their shoes. We don't mind spending more if it would mean we'd get high quality running shoes. After all, a good pair of shoes could last us a long time.
Speaking of running shoes, did you know that there is a new brand of running shoes coming to the Philippines soon? The name is On Running. Hmm, I wonder if they have my size (US 7.5, UK 6). I always have a hard time finding the perfect running shoes because most of the time, the style I want doesn't carry my size. Or they just run out of it easily. Haha.
My running experience with the fiancee has been good. I like it that my body is getting stronger and my muscles, leaner. I can feel that we're getting healthier each day. I just hope we are able to sustain our interest in running because it is a great way to achieve optimum health.
How about you, are you also into running? How's it been so far?

New UPDATE: This entry won third place in the Fit 'n Right Blogger Contest. Awards night was held at The Stock Market, BHS Taguig City on December 14, 2009. Thank you so much to all who commented and prayed for me to win. This little achievement has been a great experience for yours truly. Again, thank you and Merry Christmas! :)
UPDATE: The online registration for the Dare to be Fit 'n Right Fun Run is now available at http://www.runningmate.ph/del_monte. Check it out, guys!
I've always been conscious of my health. Sometimes I'd get paranoid about it. I've always wanted to be fit but I'm too lazy to follow a workout and watch my diet. Last Friday's bloggers launch of the Dare to Be Fit 'n Right Fun Run 2009 held at Taste Asia, Mall of Asia was a very enlightening and fun experience for me. Aside from sampling a variety of delicious Taste Asia dishes, enjoying free WIFI and mingling once again with fellow bloggers, I learned a lot about health and fitness from sports scientist and fitness expert Coach Jim Saret. He expounded on the real meaning of "fit" and shared with us his amazing 4-minute workout and a healthy juice drink that are sure to get you back in shape.

Coach Jim Saret giving a short lecture to the bloggers
F.I.T. Workout
In this age of fast food, people gain weight easily. A typical Filipino diet, for instance, is composed of three meals and three snacks. Altogether, it amounts to 3,000 to 5,000 calories already. According to Coach Saret, our body doesn't need that much in a day. An average person weighing 150 lbs. can only burn up to 1,800 calories when at rest or when he's not active. If you enjoy eating but lead a sedentary life, your chances to gain weight is high.
To introduce his amazing 4-minute workout called Fast Intense Training (FIT), Coach Saret brought his guy friend on stage and instructed him to do several exercises. The guy was wearing a calorie counter watch so at the end of the 4-minute time period, they were able to record the amount of calories he burned. It was 96 and we couldn't believe it. It's almost as much as the number of calories one can burn running on a treadmill for 30 minutes (100 calories).

The guy's metabolism went faster because of the strength training he did. It had remained so even when he was already at rest. When he left the venue, his calorie counter watch had a whopping 469 on its screen! I knew because I was the one asked by Coach Jim to read it out. It can be said then that the FIT workout is all about strength training.

Coach Saret also called on three blogger volunteers (Earth, Jeff and Dani) and asked them to demonstrate his FIT workout to everybody in the room. They were assisted by Fit 'n Right people and one of them was beauty queen Abby Cruz. The workout looked easy to do and when the three bloggers were asked if their bodies were somewhat awakened or re-energized, they all answered affirmatively.

Fit 'n Right as a Fat Burner
Getting fit is no easy feat. It entails discipline (lots of it!) and determination. Aside from following an effective workout and doing it religiously, you also have to help your body burn the extra calories and fats by giving yourself a good dose of L-Carnitine. This substance is naturally found in the human body and is present in every bottle of Del Monte Fit 'n Right Juice Drink.

To get fit, you must understand how your body works. Coach Jim Saret emphasized this during his talk. This means if you want to get fit, you have to follow a workout (FIT was really impressive!) and get proper nutrition. For those who are trying to lose weight, it'll help a lot if you'd take in lesser calories and include L-Carnitine in your diet. A combination of FIT workout and Fit 'n Right is actually a good fitness regimen that you can try right inside the comforts of your own home.
Dare to be Fit 'n Right Fun Run 2009
Del Monte, the company that carries the Fit 'n Right brand, is known for its health advocacy. Its products, that range from pasta and sauces to fruit juices and snacks, are especially made to help provide proper nutrition to consumers. Health and fitness are interrelated so it's no wonder that Del Monte, through Fit 'n Right, is currently promoting a fitness campaign for Filipinos. They have already lined up several activities that will culminate in a fun run on November 22, 2009 at the SM Mall of Asia.

This substance is naturally found in the human body and is present in every bottle of Del Monte Fit 'n Right Juice Drink.
"Del Monte Fit ‘n Right helps the body burn calories and fat faster. It contains L-Carnitine, a substance that is naturally found in the human body. L-Carnitine transports the fatty acids into the mitochondria, the cell’s powerhouse where they are burned into energy needed for a healthy heart and other important body functions.
If L-Carnitine levels are increased, the body’s ability to oxidize fat is optimized. With supplementary L-Carnitine, proper diet and regular exercise, one can achieve ideal body weight and ensure a healthy life.
Del Monte Fit ‘n Right also contains Vitamin B1, B6 and B12 that helps speed up metabolism, resulting in faster weight loss. Vitamins B1, B6 and B12 are energy boosters and increases endurance by facilitating the conversion of carbohydrates, protein and fat into energy that is needed by the body in performing physical functions. It also contains natural fruit juice that provides the body with 100 percent of its RDA.
Making Fit ‘n Right an integral part of one’s diet is a surefire way to lose weight and keep fit. A clinical study led by Dr. Leonora Panlasigui of the University of the Philippines found that a person loses as much as 16.7 percent of body fat in just six weeks with regular consumption of Fit ‘n Right, diet and exercise.
Although packed with vitamins and L-Carnitine, Fit ‘n Right is delicious and refreshing, so making it a habit is both fun and guiltless."
