If there is one thing that the incoming administration of President-elect Noynoy Aquino should prioritize, it’s healthcare. It is undeniable that health is one of the most pressing problems in the Philippines. Each day Filipinos die due to limited to zero access to healthcare. Is it really impossible for the government to build hospitals or at least health clinics in every barangay in the country? I strongly believe the action should start right there.

I’m not rich but somehow I feel luckier than many Filipinos because my family and I don’t get sick that often. And in those times that we got sick, we always had enough money to cover our medical needs. But for how long can we afford it? Medicines get pricier by the day, which is so unlike the ones sold at online pharmacies (Online Apotheke in Dutch) that are dirt-cheap. The same applies to hospital and laboratory fees.

Right now I’m thinking about my parents, who are now in their early 50’s, and their healthcare. I am not so sure if I could still pay for their healthcare when the time comes that they’d be in dire need of it. I can only hope and pray that they remain healthy and well-nourished for a few more years. I know I should do something about it while I’m young and can take good care of them. I hope the new President thinks about the well-being of middle-aged Filipinos as much as he cares for the Filipino youth.
