Today is a very significant day for our workers. I know many countries around the world are celebrating the same occasion. The journey of the Filipino worker has been a long and winding road. Low wages, poor working conditions, abuse and maltreatment are just some of the problems that our workers face in this modern, capitalist world. It's a pity that despite the efforts of both the public and the private sectors in the Philippines, nothing concrete has been established to improve the quality of life of the majority of our workers.

The forthcoming presidential elections give us a glimmer of hope, though. Among the presidential aspirants, I see some who seem serious about upholding the rights and championing the cause of the great Filipino worker. But we really don't have to wait for the President to make the changes, even we can help push for change by asserting our rights in the workplace such as by negotiating salaries with our prospective employer during the pre-employment stage or by joining a worker's union during the employment stage. We can all make a difference, we just have to be aware.

To all my fellow workers, happy Labor Day and let's be proud of ourselves! :)
