My internet use in the office is anything but minimal. I use the internet anywhere from two to five hours a day. It’s basically for work-related stuff, though I’d be a hypocrite if I’d say I don’t use the internet (in the office) for leisure. I know many workers can relate to that. But then, I make it a point to prioritize work lest I lose my job.
I’m glad that every time I use the internet at the confines of the workplace, I practice maturity, accountability and prudence. This means limiting my internet access to researching, social networking and blogging. This also includes keeping myself from downloading data that could harm our network. As in most companies, our IT department had installed a firewall in our system that keeps us users from video streaming and downloading dirty stuff (if you know what I mean). I know it’s for our PC’s safety and protection as well.
My boyfriend, who’s with our IT department, is one disciplined professional. No matter how much I bug/plead to him, he wouldn’t install necessary programs (e.g. Photoshop, Yahoo Messenger, multimedia player, file converter, etc.) to my PC. He keeps on saying that they have protocols being followed and should he give in to my request, it would be unfair to other users.
I remember I once tried suggesting to him the use of port forwarding so that my share of unauthorized data could pass through the firewall and get transported to a specific location which is my PC and my PC alone. It’s safe, effective and smart, isn’t it? But still, he wouldn’t budge. This is the only complaint I have with respect to my internet usage in the office. And I can feel it will be like this for as long as I'm working there. Good thing I have internet connection at home, I can do whatever I want with my laptop without worries.
