I'm not a love guru but for some reason, I can easily detect signs of an abusive relationship. It must be because I've heard so many stories from girl friends relating to the topic. Last night, I had a casual talk with a friend that ended up in a serious, heart-to-heart talk about love and relationships. She confided to me that she's been in an abusive relationship before and it took her a long time before admitting to herself the grave circumstance she was in and finally deciding to end her misery by breaking up with the guy. Yes, it is true that women, and not men, are the usual victims of an abusive relationship.
Below are some tell tale signs of an abusive relationship that we should be aware of:
1. Your partner doesn't care embarrassing you in front of your friends.
2. You are experiencing physical or verbal violence or both from your partner.
3. Your partner is jealous of your friends, family and co-workers.
4. Your partner is taking control of your own money, with or without your permission.
5. Your partner gets angry about how you express yourself (e.g. the clothes you wear, your hairstyle, the way you communicate with other people, etc.).
6. Your partner checks on you and your daily activities in an unusual way.
7. Your partner is unreasonable, accusing you of bad things you have never done.
8. Your partner forces you to have sex after you have refused.
9. Your partner declares threats against you and your family if you end the relationship because of his wrong behavior.
10. Your partner hits the wall, drives the car dangerously and do other things to scare the hell out of you.
11. Your partner has kept you from getting a job, caused you to lose a job or wanted to dictate what job you should accept.
12. Your partner blames you for all the bad luck he's experiencing.
