While I can't be considered obese at any point in my life, I have had and will always have weight issues. For instance, I've been trying real hard to achieve my desired weight of 110 pounds. So far, I was able to shed off 10 pounds and presently enjoys a weight of 120 pounds. Given that, I'm 10 pounds away from my goal. Did it affect my self-esteem? The answer is a big and resounding yes.

Weight is just one of the many factors that affect a person's self esteem. This is very true with women. Women tend to be obsessed of their weight. Generally, we want to be slim for the rest of our lives. It could be the society we live in but I'd like to think it's the standards set by media that aggravates the problem. Thin people are branded by the media with all the positive qualities one can ever compose (e.g. beautiful, sexy, fashionable, stylish, smart, go-getter, etc.) Their weight is set as the ideal that everyone should work to achieve. That's why you see thin people in everything media, from the Internet and TV down to fashion magazines and gossip tabloids.

The psychological impact of excess weight is most felt by women. This is because we are treated by society as its most valuable commodity, perhaps to ensure its continued existence. Women reproduce and fill the world, breathing life into civilizations. In most societies, women are pursued, therefore, we should be appealing. Also, we are more vain than men. We want acceptance more than them. Actually, there's a lot of interconnected aspects in our system responsible for this. Our hormones is just one of them. Given all that, it seems we can't do something about the fact that weight is a big factor that affects our self-esteem.

us, women should take care of ourselves, our health specifically. but we should not do it merely for impressing others.

Yes being overweight is a huge burden on self esteem. I still find that although you may be slim, for as long as you are conscious about weight you lack constant positive self esteem.

@nobe: correct. however, it's easier said than done.women should really work to achieve their desired weight only if it will make them happier and more confident. :)

@lucy: like i said, i still have weight issues because i have yet to achieve my desired weight. right, i'm still conscious about my weight but i can say i'm functioning well. hopefully, when i reach the 110 mark, my confidence and self-esteem will get stable. :)
