Did you know that based on archeological evidence, the earliest recorded production of wine in 6000 B.C. took place in Georgia and Iran? The two locations are both within the natural area of the European grapevine called Vitis vinifera. Wine has since then been used in religious and social ceremonies. Today, people have continued to perfect the art of wine making and of course, wine drinking. The breadwinner didn't imagine that she'd be in for some interesting wine lessons over at her part-time work.

Yesterday afternoon at the fine dining restaurant where I work as part-time tour-guide, our boss initiated a wine lesson to educate us further about wines. Honestly, I know only a bit about the subject. And I only get to drink wine on special occasions. The idea of understanding, and eventually learning the art of wine drinking, fascinates me so much that I found myself listening intently as our boss introduced us to the intriguing world of wines. Yes, she taught us herself and I found the act so thoughtful and inspiring.

After a brief intro about the different characteristics of a particular wine that distinguish itself from the others (e.g. age, color, clarity, legs, smell, taste, etc.), she moved on to lesson proper by introducing us to two different white wines: Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. She decided to teach us two different wines per session so we won't get confused. We did some wine tasting as part of the wine exercises she gave us. The session was effective. Now we know the difference between the two varieties of white wine.

Here are some facts that you need to know about wine:

1. Age. The older, the better. Europe makes good wine. It is because they are the ones who started the art of wine making.

2. Color. The darker the color of a wine, the more alcohol content there is.

3. Smell. The smell clearly differentiates a wine from another. Usually, the smell of a wine resembles that of citrus fruits because of the process called fermentation.

4. Taste. The taste of wines vary from sweet and sour to bitter and a combination of it all. There's also this "umami" taste (malinamnam in Tagalog) that we usually find in aji-namoto, catsup and other spices and seasonings.

5. Price. The pricier, the better. The market dictates it based on the law of supply of demand. Enough said.

6. It takes time to learn the art of wine drinking. It helps if you try one wine variety at a time. Patience is a virtue (pun intended).

Apparently, our boss really wants us to learn new stuff every now and then because she wants to have knowledgeable staff. It'll further improve the already good service at LCDTM, no doubt about that.

Yesterday's wine lesson made me appreciate wines even more. It's true that you really can never say that you know something if you hadn't experience it. I am so looking forward to our next wine lesson. :)
