Note: The poem below is dedicated to my sister Nyam who celebrated her 17th birthday last Wednesday, 8 October 2008. This is a bit late, but still, I want her to know and remember decades from now that I made this piece especially for her. :)
After four years of waiting you finally made it,
In college you knew things would be different
Much hard work is needed, you have to live by the rules.
I still remember the day when you came from the province
You were smiling and we were excited,
You were to live with us in the city
Away from our family whom we love so dearly.
Enrollment came and things went fast
We worked as a team and soon you passed,
School started and you became a college student
Newbie and learning everything from the start.
Living in the city is way different
To living a simple life in the province,
Here, danger is just lurking in the corner
You have to be strong and wary all the time.
I may not be the perfect guardian
And may be inconsiderate at times,
But believe me when I tell you that I love you
And will do everything to keep you from harm.
I know it's a big adjustment on your part
But lemme assure you, your Kuya and I are on your side;
No matter what happens we're just here for you
Always supporting you to make your dreams come true.
There may be no lavish celebrations nor expensive gifts
To welcome the start of another chapter in your life
But you got some of the most important things anyone would wish for
A loving family, real friends and a promising future.
Happy birthday, my dear sister!
Always remember to follow the desires of your heart
Seek happiness and contentment over worldly possessions
And try hard to lead a life of meaning and purpose.
