Warning: I have written some spoilers for the movie The Mummy 3. Continue reading at your own risks.
My friends and I watched The Mummy 3 last night at Trinoma. Much as I want to come up with a thorough review of the movie, I can't. It just so happened that I didn't like it that much. I had fun but for someone who was expecting to get wowed, disappointment was not a good thing at all.
I know, Brendan Fraser was still as effective as ever and the rest of the cast really did well but this third installment to the Mummy Series had some missing points. To begin with, there was not much story to tell and there was a strange sense of tiredness and boredom in it. It is a given that the storyline is predictable (i.e. the mummy rises, the mummy falls), but then, they should've injected new twists and made a better execution of the mummy's defeat. No offense meant, but it was like I was watching some Chinese epic movie.
Rachel Weisz is not in the movie anymore, which I think is one of the reasons why the Mummy 3 isn't as good as I assumed it to be. I have always associated her with the Mummy Series. I missed her agility and strong character as Evey O'Connell. But in fairness, the actress who replaced her did an excellent job but the effect isn't the same, if you know what I mean.
For me, the family values instilled in between encounters, the hilarious scenes and the blossoming of love between the young archaeologist (Fraser's character's son) and the immortal girl (who became mortal in the end) are the movie's saving grace. If not for these elements, it would've crashed and fallen.
From the movie house, I met up with my college friends to have some coffee. We headed for Starbucks first but ended up at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (CBTL). I regretted not bringing the CBTL gift cert I got from the workshop I attended months ago. Lol.
At the coffee shop, my college friends and I discussed a lot , from business and personal debts to marriage and family life. You know you and your friends are getting old when you don't talk about ordinary stuff anymore. Instead, you talk about serious matters which now form a big part of your daily lives. Funny, right? But then, when you come to think of it, you're really not getting any younger and the time is passing faster than you could ever imagine. If you won't act now to make something of yourself, you'll get stuck and won't be able to achieve your goals. That is, if you have goals in life.
During times like this, the rational side of me can't help but contemplate on things. Ah, adults are really incomprehensible.
